What is a will?

A calm explanation of what a will is and what it does in real life.

Most people know, in broad terms, that a will is “something you should probably have one day”. What’s less clear is what it actually is — and what it does in real life.

A will is a written record of your wishes for after you die. It allows you to say, in advance, how the things you leave behind should be handled, and who should be responsible for doing that.

At its simplest, a will answers three basic questions:

  • Who should look after things when I’m gone?
  • Who should receive what I leave behind?
  • Who should make sure this actually happens?

That’s it. Everything else is detail.

A will is not a list of everything you own, and it’s not about control. It’s a way of reducing guesswork so others don’t have to interpret silence later.

Understanding what a will actually is often makes the idea feel smaller — and more manageable — than expected.
